Getting to Know the Author: Karen Magill

ImageWelcome, Karen. Let’s learn more about you …

What is your genre? Why did you choose it?

For fiction, I write paranormal, because I believe that it is all possible. My first nonfiction book – On The Right Side, My Story of Survival and Success – is a motivational story of my journey with MS. I believe that as long as you are not six feet under, you are on the right side and anything is possible.

Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?

I work on one at a time. I find it easier to do it that way.

Do you work with a writing/critique group?

No, I am not a person to join groups. However, I use beta readers to read my finished manuscript before it goes to the editor.

Can you remember your first reading book?

I remember a book called Arty the Smarty, it was about a fish. My grandmother had a children’s book published the year I was born entitled Wonderful Things so that may have been the first one I read.

Do you nibble on snacks while writing? If so, what is your chosen treat?

I don’t snack when writing. Sometimes I get so involved, I forget to eat entirely.

Tidy desk or a bombsite? Describe your writing area with us.

Since I work at a desktop computer, it is on a computer stand and I have a small table beside the stand. I try to keep it neat but after a while, the papers and stuff pile up. I have research books on the floor beside me. Then again, a clean desk is a sign of a sick mind. LOL

Image Are you published in the traditional manner or self published? Share your journey.

My first two books were self published, my third traditionally published by Saga Books and my fourth – the nonfiction – was self published. Later this year, I will have my fifth book published by Saga Books.

Who would you say have been the three most influential authors in your reading/writing life?

Katherine Magill (my grandmother), Morgan Llewellyn (I loved her book, Lion of Ireland) and Ann Rule. All influence me in different ways.

What advice would you like to share with other writers/authors with regard to preparing a manuscript?

Research, research, research. If you can’t afford a professional formatter then research how to set the book up properly.

If the movie rights to your novels are purchased, who would you like to play your main characters?

If my latest, On The Right Side, My Story of Survival and Success were to be made into a movie, I would like to see Shannon Doherty play me. In Missing Flowers, I would love to see Miley Cyrus play the part of the drug addicted hooker trying to go straight. I am not sure on the other characters though.

I was on my way to the supermarket, when … Do you have a tale to tell relating to an everyday, boring event?

When I first started walking with a cane, it was a shiny gold colour. I walked into a shopping mall and a toddler came up and grabbed the cane. She didn’t want to let go of it!

Karen Magill believes that anything is possible. When she writes fiction, Karen likes to treat the paranormal as an everyday occurrence because she believes that these attributes are within us all.

Forced to leave the workforce in 2000 by the onslaught of MS, Karen saw this as an opportunity to explore her lifelong desire to write. Initially she explored other areas of writing before deciding that her future lay with creating novels.

To date, Ms. Magill is the author of three published paranormal novels, including the award winning The Bond, A Paranormal Love Story. Her first non-fiction  book, an inspirational story of her journey – so far – with multiple sclerosis is entitled On The Right Side, My Story of Survival and Success. Her fourth paranormal novel, A Little Poison – the sequel to Missing Flowers – should be out sometime in 2014.

Karen lives in an eclectic area of Vancouver Canada and draws inspiration from the history and stories around her.
