Note from Glynis: I briefly met, Pippa at The Festival of Romance 2013. I had the pleasure of hearing her chat about her life as a writer. I have a sneaking feeling this is a picture I took of her reading from her book at one of the events.
Welcome, Pippa. Let’s get to know more about you …
What is your genre? Why did you choose it?
I write lively funny – and sexy – romantic fiction. I didn’t choose it, it chose me because the first piece of fiction I ever wrote was a fanfic. Until then I never read romance but it turned out that was what I loved to write!
Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?
Yes, because I’m under contract for a three book series with Penguin at the moment, so I’m always writing and editing two or even three books at once.
Do you work with a writing/critique group?
No, I’ve never used a critique group but I do show my work to my agent and two trusted author friends, and brainstorm ideas with them – they’re a wonderful bunch of women.
Can you remember your first reading book?
Not the first because I was about four, but I did read a lot! I also recall my auntie buying me a set of ‘classics’ that included Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery & Terror. I was only about 7 and it preyed on my mind until this day.
Very intense reading material for a 7 year old!
Do you nibble on snacks while writing? If so, what is your chosen treat?
Sadly yes. I try to make it something healthy like dried apricots or a banana but I end up eating biscuits. Do fig rolls count as one of your five a day?
YES! Love fig rolls, so I hope so!
Tidy desk or a bombsite? Describe your writing area with us.
Bombsite. I actually have an office but it’s jammed with paperwork from my copywriting and holiday let business, and it’s also dark so I’ve morphed my clutter to the dining room and lounge. I use my laptop to write novels as it feels more relaxed.
I♥ my laptop! So versatile.
Are you published in the traditional manner or self published? Share your journey.
My first novel was published by Headline 2006, and everything happened really fast. It won a major award – the RNA’s New Writers Scheme and went on to be made into a Lifetime movie in the US. There have been a few ups and downs since but I’ve now had books published by Headline, Piatkus, Samhain and my new Penguin series.
The First Time We Met and Second Time I Saw You are my 11th and 12th novels.
Wow, how wonderful to have your book made into a movie! Congratulations.
Who would you say have been the three most influential authors in your reading/writing life?
Jane Austen, Liz Fielding, Ian Rankin
What advice would you like to share with other writers/authors with regard to preparing a manuscript?
Rewrite, polish and try to get a constructive opinion from a professionally published author or editor that you trust.
If the movie rights to your novels are purchased, who would you like to play your main characters?
Amazingly, my debut novel *was* made into a movie – starring Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, the West Wing, Pushing Daisies) and Josh Hopkins (Cougartown and The Perfect Storm), which was amazing, and I got to visit the set in Canada. As for the Oxford Blue series, I’d like American star, Blake Lively to play Lauren and Tom Mison (from Sleepy Hollow and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) to play Alexander.
I am green with envy! How wonderful.
I was on my way to the supermarket, when … Do you have a tale to tell relating to an everyday, boring event?
I was writing in my office one day when the gorgeous actor, Richard Armitage phoned me. But that’s another story…
Oh, but … what? Wait, don’t go!
