Getting to Know the Author: Leyla Atke

DSC_2410 (2)HeartWelcome, Leyla. Let’s learn more about you …

What is your genre? Why did you choose it?
Hello. My name is Leyla Atke, I am an award-winning author of “Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat”. I write non-fiction. An incredible true story which happened to me many years ago inspired me to write my first book.

Do you work on more than one manuscript at a time?
No. I am currently working on my second book which will be a sequel for “Charm: An Amazing Story of a Little Black Cat”.

CHARM COVER AMAZONDo you work with a writing/critique group?
No. But I do work with other authors and I benefit a lot from their experiences and critique. Thanks to working with them, I’ve made a significant progress with my book and improved my writing skills.

Can you remember your first reading book?
Oh yeah, it was “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson, a must read for any teen.

Do you nibble on snacks while writing? If so, what is your chosen treat?
No, I usually do not do that.

Tidy desk or a bombsite? Describe your writing area with us.
I prefer quiet atmosphere when I am writing. I need a total isolation from everything and I need a lot of time alone. I like writing sitting on the sofa with my laptop.

Are you published in the traditional manner or self-published? Share your journey.
I am a published author. My book was published in 2010 by Strategic Book group. In 2009, I wrote a book and was looking for a publisher. I sent my manuscript to few publishers and Strategic Book Group quickly showed interest in publishing of my book. I found a publisher for my work quite easy and quickly.

Who would you say have been the three most influential authors in your reading/writing life?
There was a big home library in my parent’s house which included works of pearls of the world literature such as Alexandre Dumas, Jules Verne, Maurice Druon, Victor Hugo, Leo Tolstoy and many others. I am so thankful to my parents who instilled in me a love for books from childhood. My mother is a professional journalist, writer and newspaper editor, so love to books is in my blood. Alexandre Dumas, Jules Verne and Maurice Druon are most influential authors in my reading life. I read most of their works.

What advice would you like to share with other writers/authors with regard to preparing a manuscript?
Be precise and try to capture the attention from first sentences. Then keep the reader’s interest high until the end. Hire a professional editor.

If the movie rights to your novels are purchased, who would you like to play your main characters?
As my story is psychologically complex due to wide range of emotions, I would love to see Angelina Jolie as my main character, who was actually me. I think she would have coped with it perfectly.

I was on my way to the supermarket, when … Do you have a tale to tell relating to an everyday, boring event?
…I saw a little black kitten in the middle of the busy road. That’s how my award-winning story starts. In my case, I was on the way to hairdresser. Simple boring day turned into a fascinating story about little kitten rescue from the middle of a busy road.
